A Small Guide for Pattern Design

If you've been following patterns for a while and are ready to take the leap into designing your own, you're in for an exciting journey. Designing crochet patterns allows you to express your creativity and share your unique creations with the world. Here is a small and quick guide that helped me with designing and writing patterns.

Inspiration and Concept: What is the inspiration for your design? This could be anything from nature-inspired motifs to geometric patterns.

• Inspiration and Concept: What is the inspiration for your design? This could be anything from nature-inspired motifs to geometric patterns.

• Sketching: Roughly sketch out your design on paper or digitally to visualize how it will look. This helps in planning the layout and understanding stitch placement. Also, try sampling different color combinations during this step. I found that using a color wheel is very nifty for this step.

• Yarn Selection: Choose the appropriate yarn for your project based on its weight, fiber content, and color. Consider how the yarn will affect the drape, texture, and overall appearance of the finished piece. Also, consider what type of yarn you typically use.

• Swatching: DO. IT. Create a gauge swatch to determine the correct tension and ensure that your finished project will be the correct size. This is crucial for accurately writing the pattern and helping others replicate your design. (I'm guilty of skipping this part sometimes, and I kick myself later down the line later for it...)

• Take Notes for Pattern Writing: When in the process of designing the piece, take notes of the process. Hook size, yarn, weight, and guage calculations, these are all important before your initial pattern draft. Write down stitch count, size, and if gauge changes at all.

• Writing the pattern: With the help of your notes, clearly write out the pattern instructions, including the materials needed, stitch abbreviations, and step-by-step directions for each section. Use standard formatting and clear language to make the pattern easy to follow.

• Technical Editing: This is optional, but its worth it! Hiring a tech editor is a great way to have a second set of eyes on your pattern. They check for spelling mistakes and check the math in the pattern.

• Photography: Take high-quality photos of the process of making the project and the finished project to showcase the design and provide visual reference for knitters or crocheters.

Designing and writing crochet patterns is a creative and fulfilling way to contribute to the fiber arts community. These are some tips that I had to learn over time. Hopefully with careful planning and a bit of testing, you can create patterns that other crocheters will love to make!
